The central character is George Haskett, ex Navy, now a local garage owner, Through his eyes we see him get roped in by his friend Alec Davidson and local MP Sir Edward Bingham, into a group determined to save the local railway from Merhead to Tenbridge, under threat of closure by Beeching. Lightly humorous throughout, George tells the real story of railway preservation, as opposed to the 'public face'.
