Firstly, apologies to anyone who was trying to get on to either Andrew's website or this site during Saturday/Sunday morning. Apparently a server update ran foul of some of the security routines in the websites and as a result anyone trying to access got an 'Internal Server Error' message. They were back up again from about half-one this afternoon. Oh, and a thank you to all those who wrote or texted wishing me a belated happy birthday.

The grand changeover of Weekend Rails to a slightly different appearance is drawing ever nearer and will almost certainly be during the next week. You'll see a slightly different sub-headline, and the left hand column will change and there'll be a sort of monthly gallery section where you can see all the pictures and videos outside the main blog section. I hope you will like the new style and features. Last time I looked, 2010 and half of 2011's posts had been copied across, so there should be no loss for any newcomers sufficiently interested to wade back through.

Those of my readers who like to think of themselves as regular will be aware that the first weekend of the month is generally regarded as the best weekend, where "things go right". It was a pity therefore that the Saturday was taken up with another Class 14 Owners group meeting, where the company was pleasant (people representing D9516, '20, '21, '23, '26, '31, '37 and '55 were there, and good friends amongst them) but when someone starts asking about the rumoured 10 spare Paxman engines that Swindon had for the '14s?

I threw in the last two lines of last week's blog just as a way of rounding it off, but I should have known better. First thing Monday morning Andrew learned that, owing to administrative screw-up, there was in fact no vehicle heading to Hollycombe to collect "Jack" despite several prior assurances. To cut a long story short, a vehicle finally rolled in on Wednesday afternoon and despite awkward access, darkness and other such impediments, "Jack" was loaded and on its way before the end of the day.

We already knew that Andrew would be away on Saturday attending a birthday party. so I was to have one of those extremely rare things, a free weekend day. For once I was to escape rail activity, but to make up for it, we slipped over to Rowsley Friday night in order to reposition a few locos to make them more readily accessible for a long day on Sunday.

A couple of weeks ago I said that the departure date for Pluto was the 25th and could not be deferred. I was wrong. All it needed was the driver to ring in sick and Heanors have no spare man available because of holidays. Peak Rail’s Rob Sanders and I had been waiting 45 minutes before we learnt this of course, and after a flurry of phone calls, we re-scheduled the move to Friday.

Saturday – Scunthorpe. The 407 was laden down with all the usual kit, plus Andrew’s Cebora MIG welder etc so that he could weld in a replacement section to the radiator filler neck on “Beverley”. I had various little jobs to do, including some bits and bobs on the 03 and replacing a damaged gearbox cylinder air hose on “Bev’” with nylon pipework.

Saturday: Up until lunchtime on Friday, I was supposed to be on site changing the spring on an 0-6-0 for a client, so Andrew had arranged instead to go see his girlfriend. Then a phone call came through that the job had to be postponed so I was at a loose end.

Ever since I went self-employed, if I am at home at lunch time, I seem to end up watching Bargain Hunt over my sandwiches. It has little relevance to this blog, save that it involves auctions, an environment that Mrs B is quite familiar with. Ever since Barclays bank screwed up my business back in 2001, we have watched a particular monthly auction in Sheffield, and over the years a surprising amount of tools and tackle have come our way from there, from swaging machines to sack trucks.

Saturday: Plan A had been to head out to Scunthorpe, but during the week I’d had trouble with a leaky ball cock on the loo and Saturday morning it started again, so I cut another washer and when that made no difference, headed down to Wickes to find that of the 6 ball cocks they stocked, none looked remotely interchangeable.
