Tales of the Andrew Briddon Loco collection

Elsewhere - www.andrewbriddonlocos.co.uk - you can see the "official" face of the locomotive collection my son has built up. Here on "Weekend Rails" you can read a blow-by-blow account of our work in restoring and improving them.

Of auctions, values and vandalism

26th March 2017

As you know, we are apt to acquire things from auctions. Not just e-bay, but “traditional” auctions where the bidding may be on-line but more often in person. But years of watching BBC's Bargain Hunt has taught us to know what it is you are bidding for, what it is worth and not get carried away with the moment.

Of wheels and deals

19th March 2017

A visitor asked on Saturday 'How many of these locos actually work?' and for once I could say, that one, that one, that one, that one, and that , that and that could be made to go with batteries and an hour or two's work... It is not that we have made any dramatic moves forward on the collection, but suddenly you realise just how much we have achieved - so far.

Of returning heroes

12th March 2017

It's been a pleasant weekend here in delightful Derbyshire, the rain has stopped and today was positively spring-like.  I shouldn't put a jinx on it though. Probably by Friday we'll have storm 'Egbert' or some such with snow hail and hurricane winds. As my old geography master used to say 'Britain doesn't have a climate, only weather – discuss'.  Strange how if we then tried to discuss it between ourselves we were always told to be quiet.

Of fuel, throttles and fences

5th March 2017

Here we are in March. Time seems to have flown this year but maybe that's because of that filming work that occupied me during January. Don't worry, I shan't harp on about it much longer. There's too much going on -

Of writes and throngs

26th February 2017

You were lucky to see last week's edition anywhere near to time. I set off south having (I thought) set it to publish at nine p.m. but in my haste had not got it right. Fortunately my hoster - Bill Hyde at Priday Design -  not only provides a first-class service but is also a reader and a friend. He popped in to the administration section, realised I'd got it wrong and set it right!

Of bogies

19th February 2017

Owing to a last minute change of schedules, I am once again whooshing down the M1 to London so this must perforce be a hurried edition.

Of rams and presses

12th February 2017

A pleasant evening at Briddon Country Pile tonight. No dashing off down that darned motorway, grandson asleep in the next room and all is sweetness and light. Except that I've nothing much to write about and no photos to prove otherwise.

Of eaves, warmed or dropping

5th February 2017

Once again as this is released to the world I will be on my way down to London, so this is being started on Sunday morning.

Of sheep and Sunningdale

29th January 2017

How nice to have a quiet Sunday night at home. The last two Sundays have of course, seen me beetling down the M1 in the dark to some hotel or other having bashed out a few snippets of prose in the hope that it will serve. Tonight it is business as usual.

Of absence

22nd January 2017

Once again when I would normally be writing this I am on my way down south, with the prospect of being 'on set' at 07.30 to look forward to.

Of  a splash and dash

15th January 2017

This will have to be a quick edition as I have yet to pack, drive 167 miles and check in to a posh hotel and be up and on site by 08.00, hence tonight's title.

Of a long first week

8th January 2017

I thought I'd start off this week with a  service announcement. If you are a Virgin Media customer, you may have had difficulty getting in to Weekend Rails for the last month or so. A while ago somebody tried to hack in to Weekend Rails from a VM account, and the security software banned their IP address. But as Virgin Media uses a generic IP address, it effectively banned all of VM from access.

Of pressing matters.

1st January 2017

This week has rather been a blur, so I might get the days wrong and such, but here's a round-up of Christmas week here in delightful Derbyshire.
