If you're one of those avid readers who visits during the course of Sunday evening (and generally I've had had the first four or five visitors before I've even had time to do the obligatory site back-up) then – shock news – I'm not here. If you're reading this in the course of Monday, or later, then normality will have been restored.
Sunday again. Is it just me or has someone pinched a day or so this week? I could have sworn it wasn't seven days since I was last thinking what to say.
A pile of drawings arrived from an e-bay seller during the week. Ostensibly all of '04' class locos, some of them were relevant to '03s', several were duplicated, and some turned out to refer to the unique Southern 0-6-0DM numbered DS1173 (but inexplicably referred to on the drawings as a diesel electric!) which was mechanically like an 04 but whose jackshaft drove onto the middle axle and had a more simplistic style of bodywork. Ah well, I'm sure it will all come in handy some time.
That's it, pretty much back to normal it seems. Everything went smoothly last week, nothing disappeared, no error messages and everything seemed to be where it ought to be. Which probably means it'll all go wrong this week..
As regular readers will know, the weekly title for this blog – other than it always begins with “Of ..” is often a complete blank right up until I finish the closing paragraph. This week however, the title became obvious by Friday night, and I will leave you to decide which of us resembles Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
A fair amount of variety in the illustrations this week, and for most of them, I must thank Steph as she has been around to record some of what has been going on. That of course means that even camera-shy me has turned up in a few, but I hope that won't put you off your breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Ah, a portion of my faith in human nature has been restored. For in the latest Railways Illustrated has appeared a picture of 03 901 taken during the lunch break on the February 28th tour, and a write up to go with it that has managed to get all the details correct.
I like to open these posts with a thought-provoking, insightful observation into the state of the heritage railway industry or something equally profound, but usually fail to think of anything. Tonight is no exception.
So as I left it last week, the works train, but without motive power, was down at Darley and Rob, aided by whomever was available, was pursuing the track modifications and repairs. Cheedale was parked at Rowsley awaiting a new lift pump and fuel filter, and pretty much all was well with the world.
I can't believe that it's less than two weeks to Christmas. For one thing, I don't feel at all “Christmassy”: although, to be fair, I never really do feel Christmassy. I have told people in the past that Christmas lost its appeal for me after 1997, when my mother died of cancer in the early hours, but it probably goes back farther than that.
